NEWCASTLE optometrist Susan Walton will play a major role off the field at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in North Carolina.
She will be one of 49 optometrists involved in Operation Opening Eyes at the 10th multi-sport event for people with intellectual disabilities.
It will be her second tour of duty at the Special Olympics, which will attract 7000 athletes from 150 countries for the 19 track, field and court events.
Three Novocastrians, swimmer Jason King, walker Chris Hall and tenpin bowler Carol Burt, will represent Australia at the games from June 26 until July 4 at the University of North Carolina.
Ms Walton became involved with the Special Olympics movement when she was president of the Sports Vision Section of the Optometrists Association of Australia four years ago.
